Application Requirements

  • When will I receive my admissions decision?

Please review our Application Timetable for all degree program deadlines and decision dates.

  • Who should write my letters of recommendation?

Letters of recommendation should be written by people who know you well and who have been responsible for evaluating your academic or professional work. Professors and workplace supervisors are both appropriate. Get some tips from our admissions team.

  • Is the GRE or GMAT required for admission?

The GRE or GMAT is optional for admission into most of NYU Wagner's master's-level programs. However, the GRE or GMAT is required for those applying to the PhD in Public Administration and strongly encouraged for the Master of Science in Public Policy (MSPP) program.

Whether you choose to submit scores is entirely up to you. Many of our merit-based aid recipients do submit GRE/GMAT scores, as they provide an additional data point that can help us assess academic potential. While we encourage applicants to prepare for and take the GRE/GMAT to strengthen their application, it is not a requirement.

  • What are the application requirements?

Application requirements vary by degree program but generally include an online application, essays, resume, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Some programs may also require standardized test scores or additional essays.

For a detailed list of requirements for each program, please view the Application Checklists.

  • Do I need to provide a translation of my non-English transcript?

You are required to submit both the official transcript and its English translation. If the institution you attend/attended does not provide an English translation with the official transcript, you must obtain a certified English translation before submitting your application.

Following these steps will ensure the validity of your transcript:

    • Secure an official transcript from your institution in a sealed envelope.
    • Submit your unopened official transcript to the translator.
    • Ask the translator to prepare an official English translation.
    • Ask the translator to provide you with one sealed envelope containing both your original transcript and its English translation. The back of the envelope must contain the translator's signature to reflect the unaltered, true contents.
    • Submit the unopened envelope with your application.

Learn more about the admissions process for international students.

  • Do I need to submit an English language proficiency test score?

If your undergraduate or graduate degree was taught entirely in English, you are not required to submit a TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test score.

However, if your degree was not taught in English, you must demonstrate English language proficiency in one of the following ways:

    • A TOEFL score of at least 100 (We accept MyBest scores; NYU Wagner’s TOEFL School Code is 2507)
    • An IELTS score of at least 7.0
    • A Duolingo English Test score of at least 130

Please note: Test scores must be no more than two years old at the time of application submission.

  • Can I use previously submitted recommendation letters from an old application?

Students without two years of degree-relevant experience must complete the Professional Experience Requirement (PER).

  • Where can I find resources for housing and living in New York?

Whether you live on or off campus, are here for the summer, or are living in faculty housing, you will find yourself living "in and of" New York City. Manhattan's vibrant Greenwich Village neighborhood is home to many of NYU's campus buildings.

Students and faculty find housing in this community as well as its surrounding neighborhoods, boroughs and the greater New York City area.  Whether you're a new student applying to live in one of the University's residence halls or are looking for assistance in your off-campus apartment search, NYU has services and offices to simplify the New York City housing process.

You can learn more about NYU living by visiting here: http://www.nyu.edu/life/living-at-nyu.html

Starting graduate school in New York City is a unique experience. New York City provides a myriad of opportunities to engage with the city and its urban life. When students first arrive, navigating it all can be a challenge. To help students get started with determining where to live, how to get around, and how to enjoy New York, Wagner created a neighborhood map of where most students live, a list of apartment search and housing resources, and several resource links recommended by other students.
